Shock news readers - the legend that is Dumbledore is gay! So announced the Harry Potter author JK Rowling at an event in New York yesterday. "Dumbledore is gay," she said, adding he was smitten with rival Gellert Grindelwald, who he beat in a battle between good and bad wizards long ago.
Whilst the idea of one of the biggest fictional characters ever being gay represents a major move forward it isn't quite the same when you announce it as "backstory" after you have written the final book in the series! When Russell T Davis wrote the bisexual character of Captain Jack into a major BBC series - targeted at kids - that was a radical move forward. A move that was unthinkable just ten years ago. By comparison, the Rowling announcement is rather tame!
