Daily Mail Strikes Again

After linking to the earlier story about the Italian couple and their 'gay cruise' I found myself looking at the Daily Mail website. As someone who does not wake up in the morning with a hatred for all things different, I'm not a typical Daily Mail reader. The Daily Hate as some call it is surely not as nasty as people say. Well, there on the front page is a nice story about Stephen Gately, or so it seems at first - it's actually a story about the dreadful 'gay lifestyle'. Not a natural death they say - well maybe, and yes, as the story asserts, maybe Gately's partner and the Bulgarian guest did have sex that night, maybe group sex. I confess I thought it when I first heard about Gately's death.

However, whatever you think about those personal details surrounding Gately's death, that is no excuse for the sheer bile that the Daily Mail then asserts: 'Gay activists are always calling for tolerance and understanding about same-sex relationships, arguing that they are just the same as heterosexual marriages. Not everyone, they say, is like George Michael. Of course, in many cases this may be true. Yet the recent death of Kevin McGee, the former husband of Little Britain star Matt Lucas, and now the dubious events of Gately's last night raise troubling questions about what happened'.

Yes - those gay boys just can't help taking drugs and dying - according to the Daily Mail anyway. So I better get that quick orgy followed by excessive drug consumption sorted.

This response seems common in the blogosphere and twitterverse. Stephen Fry has commented on the story: 'I gather a repulsive nobody writing in a paper no one of any decency would be seen dead with has written something loathesome and inhumane.'

Unfortunately the Daily Mail et al (The Sun....who needs to say more) hold a huge influence with the British public. This is unfortunate of course because they are the print version of somebody excreting through their mouth. The concept of a 'Free Press', like many things has its positive and negative aspects, but one is left to question at times..
